 NGC 2403 is an outlying member of the M81/M82 galaxy group. This was the first galaxy beyond our own local group that had a Cepheid variable star identified in it (by Alan Sandage).
 Cepheid variables are stars with a dependable cycle of varying brightness, which is tied to it's luminosity. This makes them handy sign posts for calculating distance.
