This is an area composed primarily of hydrogen alpha emission. The "head" of the bird is designated NGC 2327. It is the brightest portion of the nebula and includes some blue reflection nebulosity. There is also a column of dark "light obscuring gases" (dark nebulae) that extend toward the bright star at the center of 2327.
